Borealopelta is one of the best preserved dinosaurs in the fossil record. Typical of nodosaurs, it had an armored back and long spikes protruding from the shoulders. The known specimen is so well preserved, the fossilized skin reveals Borealopelta had a dark reddish-brown coloration on its back, countershaded with lighter skin tones lower on its belly.
