Rhomaleosaurus

Seeley 1874

Rhomaleosaurus est un genre fossile de plésiosaures ayant vécu durant l'étage Toarcien du Jurassique inférieur dans ce qui est actuellement l'Angleterre. Initialement décrit comme une nouvelle espèce de Plesiosaurus par Alexander Carte (en) & William Hellier Baily (en) en 1863, l'animal se voit attribuer son propre genre par Harry Govier Seeley onze ans plus tard, en 1874. En 1889, Richard Lydekker le place en synonymie avec Thaumatosaurus, notamment en raison de son animosité envers Seeley. Les deux genres sont toutefois par la suite reconnus comme distincts, avant que Thaumatosaurus ne soit finalement considéré comme un nomen dubium. De nombreuses espèces ont historiquement été attribuées à Rhomaleosaurus, mais seules quatre sont actuellement considérées comme valides, les autres ayant notamment été transférées vers les genres Meyerasaurus et Atychodracon.
