Peloneustes

Lydekker 1889

Peloneustes est un genre fossile de pliosaures ayant vécu durant l'étage Callovien du Jurassique moyen dans ce qui est aujourd'hui l'Angleterre. Tous les fossiles actuellement attribués au taxon proviennent du membre Peterborough, dans la formation d'Oxford Clay. Il fut décrit à l'origine comme une espèce de Plesiosaurus par Harry Govier Seeley en 1869, avant de se voir attribuer son propre genre par Richard Lydekker vingt ans plus tard, en 1889. Alors que de nombreuses espèces ont été attribuées à Peloneustes, Peloneustes philarchus est actuellement la seule considérée comme valide, les autres ayant été déplacées vers des genres différents, considérés comme douteux ou synonymes de P. philarchus. Le taxon est connu à partir de nombreux spécimens fossiles, incluant certains très complets.
