The Triassic ( try-A-sik) is a geologic period and a stratigraphic system that spans 50.5 million years from the end of the Permian Period 251.902 Ma to the beginning of the Jurassic Period 201.4 Ma. The Triassic Period is the first and shortest geologic period of the Mesozoic Era, and the seventh period of the Phanerozoic Eon. The start and the end of the Triassic Period featured major extinction events.

New Triassic Carnivorous Dinosaur Identified from Ghost Ranch
Researchers from Virginia Tech (Virginia, USA) have identified a new species of Late Triassic dinosaur.  The dinosaur has been named Ptychotherates bucculentus.  This new carnivorous dinosaur taxon has been erected based on the detailed examination of an incomplete, well-preserved but jumbled up skull fossil (specimen number CM 31368).  The skull comes from the world-famous Coelophysis

A crushed fossil revealed a dinosaur that shouldn’t have existed
A badly mangled dinosaur skull, once forgotten in a drawer, turned out to be a rare and important discovery. Reconstructed by a Virginia Tech student, it revealed a new species of early carnivorous dinosaur with unusual features never seen before. The fossil suggests some dinosaur groups were wiped out during the end-Triassic extinction, not just their rivals. It may represent one of the last survivors of an ancient dinosaur lineage.
