Jurassic Fossil Shows Mammal-Like Throat Evolved Far Earlier Than Thought
China fossil Jurassic Mongolia
Megacauda sungei, a furry, otter-size mammaliaform that lived in what is now Inner Mongolia, China, some 165 million years ago, was semiaquatic, swimming and foraging in water, with a lifestyle analogous to the living platypus. Scientists were wrong about this strange mammal for nearly 40 years
Cretaceous fossil mammals Mongolia
A beautifully preserved fossil from Mongolia’s Gobi Desert has solved a mystery that puzzled paleontologists for nearly 40 years. Tamirkhan balcarceli shows that zhelestids were not early relatives of modern placental mammals, despite having teeth that seemed to suggest they were. Instead, the rabbit-like animal belonged to a separate lineage of small Cretaceous mammals.

Garudimimus: Beast of the Week
bird Cretaceous Dinosauria evolution Garudimimus +1
This week we're checking out a feathered dinosaur that helps us understand the evolution of the "bird mimic" family of dinosaurs.  Enter Garudimimus brevipes!Garudimimus was a theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Mongolia during the Cretaceous period, between 96 and 89 million years ago.  From beak to tail it would have measured about 11.5 feet (3.5 meters) long and it likely would have been an omnivore when alive.  The genus name translates to "Garuda Mimic", in reference to Garuda, the

These giant footprints discovered in Mongolia force researchers to review the history of dinosaurs in this region
Dinosauria discovery Mongolia tracks
For more than 70 years, this paleontological site seemed to have disappeared. Reported in the mid-20th century in a remote region of northern Mongolia, its exact location ended up being lost in the vastness of the steppes. Its rediscovery, however, shakes up what scientists...

Zavacephale: Beast of the Week
Cretaceous Dinosauria Early Cretaceous Mongolia Pachycephalosauria +2
This week we'll be looking at a newly described little dinosaur that greatly expands our knowledge on one of the most unusual kinds of dinosaurs, the pachycephalosaurs.  Welcome Zavacephale rinpoche!Zavacephale lived in what is now Mongolia during the early Cretaceous period, between 119 and 110 million years ago.  From snout to tail the specimen found would have only been about three feet (1 meter) in length, but it likely would have been able to grow larger.  The genus name, Zavacephale, tran
