Étymologie reptiles-bateaux

Pliosaurus est un genre fossile de grands reptiles marins incarnant le genre type de la famille des pliosauridés, ayant vécu du Jurassique supérieur jusqu'au Crétacé inférieur dans ce qui est aujourd'hui l'Europe. Le premier fossile connu est un squelette partiel d'un spécimen immature ayant été collecté par William Buckland dans la ville anglaise de Market Rasen. Bien que premièrement mentionnée en 1824 dans un article rédigée par William Conybeare, ce n'est qu'en 1841 où il est premièrement décrit par Richard Owen comme un représentant d'une nouvelle espèce de Plesiosaurus, avant de se voir attribuer son propre genre par le même auteur plus tard la même année. Le nom générique signifie « plus lézard », Owen ayant nommé le taxon ainsi en raison de l’apparence du spécimen décrit se rapprochant plus des crocodiliens que de Plesiosaurus. Alors que de nombreuses espèces ont été attribuées à Pliosaurus par le passé, seules six sont fermement reconnues comme valides depuis une étude publiée en 2013. Deux espèces supplémentaires découvertes en Argentine ont été nommées en 2014 et 2018, mais leur attribution au genre n’est pas pleinement confirmée selon des classifications ultérieures.
