Jurassic

201.4000 – 143.1000 Ma

The Jurassic is a geologic period and stratigraphic system that lasted about 58.3 million years, spanning from the end of the Triassic Period 201.4 Ma to the beginning of the Cretaceous Period, 143.1 Ma. The Jurassic constitutes the second and middle period of the Mesozoic Era as well as the eighth period of the Phanerozoic Eon and is named after the Jura Mountains, where limestone strata from the period were first identified.

Yi: Beast of the Week
Yi: Beast of the Week
This week we will be checking out a dinosaur that was so unusual, it completely changed what we thought we knew about dinosaur evolution.  Check out Yi qi! (pronounced "EE-chee")Yi was a small theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now Hebei, in Northeastern China during the late Jurassic period, about 159 million years ago.  From snout to tail it only measured about a foot (30 cm) long and its wingspan was about 2 feet (60cm) wide.  The genus came, "Yi" translates from Mandarin to "wing" and

On le croyait roi des océans au Jurassique : une vertèbre percée raconte un combat d’une violence extrême
He was believed to be king of the oceans in the Jurassic: a pierced vertebra recounts a fight of extreme violence
Forgotten for more than a century in the drawers of a museum, a fossil has now resurfaced and recounts a scene of extreme violence in the Jurassic oceans. An ichthyosaur vertebra, marked by the impact of a broken tooth, perhaps reveals the attack of one of the most formidable...

Could a Cetiosaurus Have Left the Longest Sauropod Trackway?
Recently, we published a post highlighting the on-going research into the remarkable Oxfordshire "dinosaur highway".  A limestone quarry preserves the remains of numerous dinosaur tracks.  The tracks are preserved in strata laid down in the Middle Jurassic.  Palaeontologists estimate that the trackways are around 166 million years old (Bathonian faunal stage).  In a recent radio

Oxfordshire Dinosaur Trackway Could Be the Longest Sauropod Trackway Known
Scientists studying the famous Oxfordshire "dinosaur highway" have announced that one of the giant trackways may represent the longest known sauropod trackway discovered anywhere in the world. The remarkable sequence of footprints, uncovered at Dewars Farm Quarry, could have been made by a single Cetiosaurus as it wandered across a Jurassic mudflat around 166 million
