Nipponopelta is the first ankylosaur discovered in Japan. It was a medium-sized nodosaur, at approximately 5 m in length. Typical of ankylosaurs, Nipponopelta was a quadrupedal herbivore covered in spikes and osteoderms down its back and tail. Interestingly, Nipponopelta is more closely related to North American nodosaurids than to its Asian contemporaries.

Rebun Island lies in the Sea of Japan off the northwestern tip of Hokkaido and is part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Momoiwa ("Peach Rock") was created in a relatively new era of Rebun Island's strata when underground magma pushed the earth's surface upward where it cooled into a huge spherical rock formation. Spheroidal joints (plate-shaped joints on the surface) peeled away like the skin of an onion, revealing the scree, which cooled at a slower rate than the surface, creating the columnar jointing that can be seen.

Fossils discovered in Japan more than two decades ago have finally been identified as a new genus and species of giant salamander. Limnospondylus ajimuensis lived around 3.5 million years ago in a warmer, wetter Kyushu and may have reached 1.1 meters in length. Its discovery hints that many more unknown giant salamanders could be hiding among fossils previously given the wrong classification.
